Single doctor for over 4,000 inmates, staff
Believe it or not, only one physician is providing treatment to over 4,000 staff members and inmates of the district central jail.
Medical officer Dr Salahuddin Mahmud alone is running the 75-bed hospital in the jail.
There is no pathologist, technician or lab and one has to go to Comilla General Hospital or Comilla Medical College Hospital even for a routine blood or urine test.
The staff members and jail inmates do not get physician anytime of the day because it is difficult to perform 24-hour duty by a single doctor.
Jail sources said there are at present 2,800 inmates in the jail.
The jail has 489 staff members and prison guards and over 1,000 members of 180 families living at jail quarters. Only one doctor is providing treatment to all of them, they said
The sources said that physician Salahuddin, posted at Comilla General Hospital, is performing his additional duty alone with the assistance of a pharmacist and a nurse. He said that he is trying his best to provide treatment to all despite various obstacles.
Senior jail superintended Ashim Kanta Paul admitted that it is impossible for a single doctor to provide treatment to so many people at the jail.
He said a 250-bed full-fledged hospital along with necessary equipment and manpower is needed for over 4,000 people.
