Expedite trial
Teachers and students of Rajshahi University (RU) formed a human chain on the campus yesterday demanding to expedite the trial of those responsible for the August 21 grenade attack on an Awami League rally seven years ago.
RU unit Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) organised the programme in front of the central library around 12:00pm.
A one minute's silence was also observed in memory of 24 people killed in the blasts including Ivy Rahman, wife of President Zillur Rahman.
Speaking at a rally held later, RU Vice Chancellor Prof Abdus Sobhan said, “We do not want continuation of killings in politics. We do not want terrorism and criminal activities in Bangladesh.
“We want the country to be established as the most peaceful country in South Asia.”
Speakers at the rally alleged that the attack was carried out under direct patronisation of the then ruling BNP-Jaamat government as per the recent supplementary charge sheet.
They also highlighted the suffering of the survivors of the attack.
History department Chairman Prof Abul Kashem, RU Public Relations Officer Prof Chitto Ronjon Misro, law and justice department Prof Hasibul Alam Prodhan, Prof Mahbabur Rahman and RU unit BCL President Ahmed Ali and General Secretary Abu Hussain Bipu spoke at the programme.
