15 Hizb ut-Tahrir men on remand
A Dhaka court yesterday placed 15 activists of banned outfit Hizb ut-Tahrir on a four-day remand each in two cases filed against them for assaulting police and anti-state activities.
Paltan police on August 13 filed two separate cases -- one for assaulting law enforcers and obstructing them from discharging their duties and another under the Anti-Terrorism Act -- against them.
Police picked up the Hizb ut-Tahrir activists on August 13 from a procession in the city's Paltan area.
At least 10 people, including a policeman, sustained minor injuries as the law enforcers baton-charged Hizb activists to disperse the procession.
Defence lawyers submitted separate petitions seeking bail saying that their clients were implicated in the cases to harass them.
Metropolitan Magistrate Keshob Roy Chowdhury rejected the bail petitions and placed them on remand.
Earlier, Paltan police produced the accused before his court seeking a ten-day remand for each in the cases.
