Election caretaking system suggested
The Election Caretaking Council (ECC) system, an alternative proposal to caretaker government, could be a viable option for holding credible polls, National Human Rights Commission Chairman Dr Mizanur Rahman said.
“Since the caretaker government system has been struck off from the constitution, political parties as well as people now look for an alternative,” Dr Mizan said.
He was talking to a delegation of the leaders of Coordination Council for Human Rights in Bangladesh (CCHRB) at his office in the city yesterday.
A four-member CCHRB delegation led by its President AHM Nouman met Dr Mizan and presented him a concept paper on the ECC.
Dr Mizan suggested raising public awareness about the ECC system so that they can rely on it as an alternative system to the caretaker government.
The Election Commission can form the council with representatives from political parties, civil society members, professionals and representatives from NGOs.
