Erosion by the river Modhumati has taken a serious turn in Lohagara upazila, rendering around 235 families homeless in the last 15 days.
The shelterless families have shifted their houses elsewhere. Now erosion threatens more than 500 families.
The affected areas are Moshepara, Mongol Hata, Korfa, Atospara of Morlickpur union, Degrirchar,Lonkerchar and Pankharchar of Etna union, Gaga, Telkara and Botdia of Kotakol union, Kashipur, Chaksi, Katlasur, Azampur, Shearebor, Rakantopur of Shalnagaor union.
While visiting the erosion-hit Moshepara area on Wednesday, this correspondent saw that a large number of people are yet to shift their houses to safer places. Many families did not even get any support from government or non-governmental organisations.
Anwar Sheikh,50, who became landless recently said, 'I had five acres of cultivable land. The river already devoured all of my lands. Now I am living with my family on other's land. The river may devour rest of our village any time,' he added.
People of erosion-hit areas told this correspondent that they had informed their woes to their lawmaker and Water Development Board (WDB) officials, but in vain.
Contacted, Lohagara UNO Arun Kumar Mondol said he had asked the chairmen of the affected unions to make a list of affected families. 'We shall take steps after receiving the list,' he said.
