“Himalayan Meltdown” screened at Alliance Francaise de Dhaka
Over 50,000 glaciers are rapidly defrosting in the Himalayan region, threatening billions of lives and livelihood throughout Asia, according to a documentary that was screened at the Alliance Francaise de Dhaka, in Dhanmondi on August 17, says a press release. The 45-minute documentary, titled “Himalayan Meltdown”, has been co-produced by UNDP and Arrowhead Films.
The documentary examines how communities in Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, India and Nepal seek to adapt to the shrinking mountain habitat, which contains 40 percent of the earth's freshwater and is a critical source for irrigation, drinking water and energy to some 1.3 billion people.
State Minister for Environment and Forests, Dr. Hasan Mahmud, was present as chief guest at the documentary screening. Stefan Priesner, UNDP Country Director, was present as guest of honour. Priesner said, “This documentary stimulates a stronger international response to the challenges of climate change. UNDP stands ready to further strengthen and expand work in research, technology transfer, and community-based responses to assist Bangladesh to adapt and adjust to the changes which are occurring now.”
