Construction worker dies in brick fall
The construction worker, who suffered severe head injuries as a brick fell on him from an under-construction building at Bailey Road in the city on Saturday, succumbed to his wounds on Sunday night.
The brick fell on the head of Shahabuddin Hawlader, 28, around 3:00pm while other workers were working on the upper floors of the eight-storey building without proper safety measure, said Ramna Police Station Officer-in-Charge Rafiqul Islam.
Assort Housing and Engineering Ltd is constructing the building.
Shahabuddin, a sanitary worker, hailed from Gauranodi upazila in Barisal.
Sahabuddin's brother-in-law Bablu Hawlader, also a worker of Assort Housing, said, “The brick fell suddenly on his head while he was carrying sanitary pipes. But we are not sure from which floor the brick fell down.”
Bablu said Shahabuddin was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where he died around 8:00pm on Sunday.
Shahabuddin's brother Chhalchhin Hawlader filed a case against seven people, including Assort Housing and Engineering Ltd chairman and its managing director, for failing to ensure safety to the workers.
Sub-inspector Abdul Kuddus Faqir, also the investigation officer of the case, said they arrested one of the seven accused, a sanitary contractor, yesterday.
“Inadequate safety measures were the cause of the death of the worker”, Faqir said.
