Some eight to ten construction workers were beaten for allegedly stalking female workers of a garment factory in Love Lane area under Kotwali Police Station in Chittagong city yesterday.
The workers of Kent Garments Private Limited beat the construction workers on the road in front of the factory around 3:00pm. The garment workers later demonstrated on Love Lane road for around 20 minutes, said the garment workers.
The construction workers managed to flee, they said.
During the incident, vehicular movement remained suspended on Love Lane road and Enayet Bazar Sarak. On information, police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control, said police.
The construction workers of a building in the area of ANZ Housing Company, a real estate company, frequently harassed the female workers of the adjacent garment factory, said the garment workers.
Shahabuddin Ahmed, the factory's chairman and managing director, said, "Our workers got extremely annoyed and were compelled to beat the stalkers.”
Neither the construction workers nor the real-estate company could be reached for comment.
However, Officer-in-Charge (investigation) Mohammad Alamgir Hossain of Kotwali Police Station said they did not hear anything about stalking.
