8 killed in road crashes
Eight people were killed and 17 others were injured in separate road accidents in Comilla, Madaripur and Netrakona yesterday.
UNB reports: Four women were killed and seven others injured when a Barisal-bound truck from Khulna rammed a rickshaw-van in Madaripur in the morning.
Witnesses said the truck hit the rickshaw-van at Tekerhat bus stand at about 11:00am, killing its four women passengers and injuring seven others, including pedestrians.
However, Rajoir thana officer-in-charge (OC) confirmed deaths of three people in the accident.
The identity of the dead could not be known immediately.
The police seized the truck.
In comilla, three people were killed and 10 others injured in a collision between two covered vans and a bus.
The accident took place at Dharanipar in Chandina on Dhaka-Chittagong highway, killing van driver Nazrul Islam, his helper Shahidul Islam and Farzana, 12, a van passenger.
As the Dhaka-bound bus collided with two Chittagong-bound covered vans, one of the vans fell into a roadside ditch, killing three people and injuring three others, the police said.
The injured are Farzana's mother Banu and her two brothers -- Sohag and Jewel.
Seven passengers of the bus were also injured in the accident. They were admitted to different hospitals.
BSS adds: Akteruzzaman Aptu, 70, a union level Awami League leader at Maska under Kendua, Netrakona, was killed in a road accident yesterday.
Police said Akteruzzaman was knocked down by a Netrakona-bound truck at Maska and caused his instantaneous death.
On information, police rushed to the spot and sent his body to the Netrakona Sadar Hospital for autopsy.
