Regional water body formed to save rivers
A regional water body, comprising water experts, activists and environmentalists from Bangladesh, China, India, Nepal, Bhutan and Pakistan was launched here yesterday to save rivers.
The river boy, "Peoples' Commission," was floated to create public opinion in favour of keeping the rivers in the Himalayan downstream alive.
President of International Farakka Committee (IFC) Atiqur Rahman Yusufzai made the announcement of the 18-member steering committee of the commission at a press conference at Jatiya Press Club in the city.
The committee members are: Atiqur Rahman Khan Yusufzai of IFC, Dr M Moniruzzaman Miah, columnist Sadeque Khan, Dr Zafar Ullah Chowdhury, Dr Jasim Uddin Ahmed, Dr SI Khan, Dr Shafiullah, Farhad Mazhar, Sayed Tipu Sultan, journalist Mostafa Kamal Majumder, Prof Dr Asif Nazrul and Syed Irfanul Bari of Bangladesh and Dr Monirul Quader Mirza (Canada), Dr Sudhirendra Sharma (India), Ramananda Wangkheirakpam (India), Dr Upendra Gautam (Nepal), Dr Shirin Akhter (Pakistan) and Arshad Abbasi (Pakistan).
