Renovation after the match!
The proposed modernisation and renovation of the dressing rooms at the Bangabandhu National Stadium looks unlikely to start before the Argentina-Nigeria friendly on September 6.
Ahead of this marquee FIFA international friendly, the National Sports Council floated tenders worth Tk 9 crore on July 17 to renovate and modernise two venues of the country: the BNS and the Birshreshtha Shaheed Mostafa Kamal Stadium in Kamalapur, but with only three weeks left for the match, no firm has yet been awarded the work order.
The inspection team of both Argentina and Nigeria will visit these venues on August 15 and 16 to see for themselves the facilities.
However, the repair, renovation and modernization of players' lounges, dressing rooms, VIP box and press box, development of the playground, internal car-parking, floodlight installation at the practice venue of the BSSMK Stadium would get underway soon and it would cost Tk seven crore, said NSC deputy director (planning and development) Habibur Rahman yesterday.
Rahman, who had earlier said they would not be able to complete all the work at BNS before September 6, yesterday said that they were thinking of arranging some makeshift furniture at both dressing rooms if renovation work could not start on time.
“We need a lot of space to implement the current plan of the players' lounge, dressing rooms at the BNS with the facilities of steam and ice baths, lockers, installation of 20 seats, dining space and we need to talk with the BCB and Bangladesh Athletics Federation to use the spaces they possess but the reality is that we have little time,” said Rahman.
