AL meets EC to talk electoral reforms today
Ruling Awami League (AL) is scheduled to join the ongoing dialogue with Election Commission (EC) today to discuss crucial electoral reforms.
The dialogue with AL, earlier fixed for June 9, was rescheduled to June 18 due to placing of the national budget in parliament.
Later, the dialogue was rescheduled for July 19, but AL could not join it either due to a cabinet meeting. Later, the EC fixed the meeting date for today as per AL's request.
Meanwhile, the EC communicated with the main opposition BNP, requesting it to join its ongoing dialogue.
Election Commissioner Brig Gen (retd) Muhammad Sakhawat Hussain on August 1 said he called BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir over phone in this regard.
“There was a cordial conversation with the BNP leader,” Sakhawat told reporters, adding that BNP showed a positive attitude towards joining the talks.
As the EC fixed August 7 to sit with AL, BNP can sit with the EC anytime before or after the date, Sakhawat had said.
EC began dialogues with 38 registered political parties on June 7. The issues being discussed includes delimitation of constituencies, state funding for political parties and EC's formation process, use of electronic voting machines and amendment to the Representation of People Order.
