Premier League to go ahead
The uncertainty over this year's Premier Division Cricket League has ended as Brothers Union withdrew their case and agreed to comply with the ruling of Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB).
It was confirmed after Brothers Union president AFM Jahangir along with three other club colleagues met BCB president Maj Gen Sina Ibn Jamali at the board's management office in Gulshan yesterday.
"I congratulate Brothers Union for their sporting spirit as they accepted my request to follow BCB's ruling. So the uncertainty is over. They expressed some of their demands and grievances in few issues and I assured them that I would do as I can," Jamali told reporters after the meeting.
"We have decided to accept the decision for the greater interest of the game. BCB president is our guardian and that's why we can't neglect his request," said Jahangir.
The decision ended players' anxiety over several months as the two Dhaka competitions are viewed as their main source of income. Now that the leagues are ready to roll and the Corporate League is also in the menu, the players heaved a sigh of relief.
Brothers Union will now play First Division League along with Indira Road. City Club was the other team of the Relegation League who survived.
A Division Bench of the High Court in November last year suspended the activities of the competition when Brothers turned to the court after the board's decision to relegate them along with Indira Road from the Premier League after the two clubs' failure to turn up for a relegation play-off match on October 4.
Gazi Ashraf Hossain Lipu, chairman of the Cricket Committee of Dhaka Metropolis (CCDM), was a relieved man after this solution as there was hue and cry among the cricketers with the uncertainty over the competition.
Lipu didn't want to comment on yesterday's meeting as he was not present but said that they would now start the work of holding the league instead of the corporate league first.
"We will meet with the club officials soon to work out everything. We will try to start the inter-club players' transfer on the last week of this month to start the league as soon as possible," said Lipu.
