Mother, girl drown in Shailkupa trawler capsize, 5 missing
A woman and her daughter drowned as a trawler capsized in Garai River in Shailkupa upazila of Jhenidah district yesterday afternoon.
Five people also remained missing as of filing this report in the evening.
The deceased are Kabita Khatun, 30, wife of Atiq Khan of Langolbandh village under Shailkupa upazila, and their six-year-old daughter Chandi.
"The trawler bound for Pangsha Keya village in Rajbari district started from Langolbandh Ghat in Shailkupa upazila at around 3:30pm. It was overloaded with passengers and pieces of iron grill and sank after a while. Locals rushed to the spot and helped passengers to reach the bank. At around 5:30pm they recovered the bodies of a woman and her daughter from the river," said office in charge Sagir Mia of Shailkupa police station.
The rescue workers of fire service department reached the spot at 5:30pm and they continued searching for five people who went missing after the accident, he said.
The trawler started with a good number of passengers amid inclement weather, said Tipu Sultan, member of Langolbandh union parishad.
