Sven ready to spend
Manchester City manager Sven Goran Eriksson confirmed his club are ready to make a splash in the transfer market after seeing his side lose 1-0 at Everton.
Eriksson was critical of a sub-par showing from his team on Saturday and confirmed that supporters can expect him to invest more of Thai owner Thaksin Shinawatra's millions before the end of the month.
"I really don't want to comment but we are working to try and bring in some other players, yes," said Eriksson.
City's toothless display demonstrated why the former England manager believes fresh talent is necessary to challenge for a Champions League place.
"In the first half, Joe Hart kicked long balls 17 or 18 times and we're not good at that," complained Eriksson. "In training that is forbidden yet we played different on a Saturday than we do in the week.
"Credit Everton, they were very aggressive. Our opponents know we want to try to play football and they want to prevent it. You have to be big enough to beat that if you want to be a great team and today, it took us 40 minutes to start playing.
"We want to play football as we can play football but kicking long balls and chasing second balls, we're not good at that. If that's how we want to play, we'll have to sell half our team and we're not going to do that.
"To be positive, the second half our attitude was right and we went straight into the game but we didn't create enough chances considering we had the ball so much. That's been a little bit of a problem over many games this season.
"But we're still working, we're not finished and we will come back to fight on Wednesday and next weekend, to try and do better."
Everton manager David Moyes saw his team join three other clubs - City, Liverpool and Aston Villa - on 39 points but admitted that the competition to finish fourth and reach the Champions League will be intense, especially with Yakubu, Steven Pienaar and Joseph Yobo away from Goodison Park for up to six weeks at the African Nations Cup.
"If you look at the way results are going, you are going to have to hang in there," said Moyes. "Teams below the top group are doing really well and it's going to be tough to finish in the top half of the league, never mind the top four or six. And it will be a difficult month for us with the boys being away.
"This was a big win. I think Manchester City are a good side, I think they play good football and I knew today, with the players we had missing, it would be a big ask."
Victory was particularly pleasing for Moyes in that the winning goal came from central defender Joleon Lescott who converted Mikel Arteta's first half cross.
The effort was Lescott's sixth of the season and a superb response from the England international who was at fault for Chelsea's winning goal in Everton's midweek League Cup semifinal loss at Stamford Bridge.
"I think he was sore at Chelsea because we realised we had let it go on the night," said Moyes. "But his performances have been so good this season, whether at centre-back or left-back, that I told him, if you're down, everybody should be down."
