13 pirates killed in gunfights with law enforcers in a year

2 killed in Sharankhola range identified

Two notorious pirates killed in gunfight with a joint team of Rapid Action Battalion-8 and coastguards in the Sundarbans on Saturday were identified as Abdul Quddus Fakir, 52, of Pathorghata upazila in Barguna district and Jahangir, 42, of Rampal upazila in Bagerhat district.
The gunfight took place at Dimerchar of Sharankhola range under east wing of the Sundarbans forest division.
The joint team also recovered 17 firearms including seven shutter guns, a single barrel gun, nine one-shooter guns, four large size daggers, 42 bullets and 22 used shells of cartridges from the place of occurrence where around 150 shot were traded in the hour-long gunfight.
Rezaul Alam, Deputy Assistant Director (DAD) of Patuakhali camp of Rab-8 lodged FIR at 2:00pm on Sunday with Sharankhola police station in connection with Saturday's gunfight.
The operation at Dimerchar of the Sundarbans was led by Commanding Officer Lt. Col Moniruzzaman of Rab-8.
With the latest deaths the total number of pirates killed in gunfights in the last one year in the east wing of the Sundarbans stands at 13.
On last March 2, two pirates were killed in gun battle with coastguards at Shupati under Sharankhola range. The dead were identified as Abu Hanif and Rafique Master, ringleader of the 'Rafique Bahini'.
On March 1, two pirates identified as Saeed Shikder and Sheikh Asad died in gun battle with Rab-8 also at Shupati under Sharankhola range.
On October 4 last year, two pirates were killed in crossfire with Rab-8 at Pathorghata of Barguna district. One of the pirates was identified as Manik Akan, ringleader of 'Daktar Bahini' of the Sundarbans.
On July 8 last year, two pirates identified as Faruk Sarder and Afzal of 'Julfiquar Bahini' were killed in gunfights with Rab-8, coastguards and police in Batikata area on the bank of Baleshwar river.
On June 10 last year, three pirates of 'Raju Bahini' died in gun battle in Charduani area under Pathoghata upazila of Bargun district. They were identified as Arab Ali, Ranga Idris and Kuddus Molla. They hailed from Sharankhola upazila.
