Understanding among local govt instts underscored
Speakers at a discussion in the port city yesterday called for establishing good understanding and reducing the communication gap between different local government institutions for proper development of the port city.
Nowzuwan, a non-government organisation, organised the discussion titled "Chittagong's Urban Future" at a local hotel. Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) panel mayor and Councillor Hasan Mahamud Hasni was the chief guest with journalist Nasirul Haque in the chair.
CCC councillors Rehena Begum Ranu and Md Giays Uddin, CCC planner AKM Rezaul Karim and Nowzuwan Chief Executive Mohammad Imam Hossain Chowdhury also spoke.
Chittagong has no authority to monitor development works of all government institutions, leading to indiscipline when the works are done individually at different times, said Hasan.
"When Chittagong Development Authority (CDA) decided to build a flyover here, they did not consult CCC. But consultation with different institutions of the government is needed to ensure the flyover's best use,” he said.
Neither did CDA communicate with CCC while beginning to work on Bahaddarhat-Kalurghat road. Since CDA will hand the road over to CCC for maintenance, it would have been better if they established communication beforehand, he added.
Rezaul said it is necessary to fix an authority to govern all development works to ensure proper development of the port city.
Speakers also called upon the government to cancel its “five-year plan” and concentrate on short and long term plans to properly develop cities like Chittagong.
