New Year 2008 - our hopes
Munir Uz Zaman / Driknews
The year 2007 was a remarkable and an eventful one for all of us. We have seen the fall of many corrupt politicians who literally destroyed the very institutions they represented. Even though it's hard to believe for the common people that these politicians are now languishing in jail for their misdeeds, nevertheless deep from our hearts, we always prayed for something like this to happen. Kudos to this caretaker government for taking this bold initiative & thus giving us something to cheer about! Our patriotic armed forces once again played an effective role in safeguarding our democracy and so we were able to avoid a civil war like situation. They were able to stop the anarchy which plagued our economy and day to day life.
Apart from this, the general people wholeheartedly appreciated this government for giving freedom to the Anti-Corruption Commission, separating the judiciary from the executive, executing the top level leaders of the militant outfit JMB, helping the Election Commission in preparing a flawless voter list with photographs etc.
Last year, we also witnessed the biggest natural disaster in recent times in the form of cyclone 'Sidr'. But as the government and the people from all walks of life came forward in aid of the Sidr victims, we were able to tackle the aftermath of cyclone Sidr in no time.
The year yielded many positives in our national life, and banking on those we can build a positive & progressive Bangladesh in the days to come. As we've stepped into the year 2008, let us all get united once again just like we did in 1971 during our glorious War of Liberation, let us all get united once again just like we did a few months ago for the Sidr victims. Our first & foremost duty should be to help the Election Commission in preparing a flawless voter list. This should be our prime agenda since holding the national election on time should be our prime focus now. Moreover, without any hesitation we can now say that the people are eagerly waiting for the trial of the war criminals. We do hope that the government would give priority to the sentiment of the people & speed up this process without further ado. Because we all believe this is the right time to do so.
Our country is blessed with many talented individuals & together we can make this land peaceful & harmonious. Ours is a country where we have people like Dr. Yunus who has won the Nobel Prize and made us all proud.
So why should we remain behind? We have many more talented individuals in our country who are constantly giving their best in the fields of sport, culture & various other mediums.
