Blast in Egypt cuts gas supply to Israel, Jordan
Unknown saboteurs bombed an Egyptian gas pipeline in Sinai yesterday, sending flames shooting into the sky and forcing authorities to cut supplies to Israel and Jordan, an official told AFP.
The attack took place at dawn near the village of Al-Sabil in the El-Arish region, the security official said, adding that the bomb was activated remotely.
Egypt's official news agency MENA reported flames as high as 20 metres shooting from the ruptured pipeline.
MENA said armed forces rushed to the scene but so far had failed to control the fire. It quoted locals as saying that they heard a "huge" explosion followed by a massive fireball.
There were no reports of casualties.
The pipeline was previously sabotaged on February 5 during a popular uprising that forced former Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak from power on February 11.
Egypt supplies about 40 percent of Israel's natural gas which is used to produce electricity.
