Resolve power, gas crises or quit power: BNP
BNP central leaders yesterday urged the government to immediately resolve the acute crisis of electricity and gas or else quit power for mid-term elections.
They made the call to the government from a rally at Mukatangan in the city, organised as part of the BNP's four-day countrywide demonstration to press the government for resolving different national issues from power and gas crisis to share market scam.
Chaired by BNP acting Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, the rally was addressed by Barrister Maudud Ahmed, MK Anwar, Mirza Abbas, Amanullah Aman and Barrister Mahbub Uddin Khokon.
Barrister Maudud said the government has “no moral right” to hang on to power if it cannot resolve the problems of electricity, gas and water.
He said BNP is preparing programs of movement and BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia will address rallies across the country to press for the people's demands.
“We'll steer the movement to such a point that the government is forced to give the mid-term elections,” Maudud told the rally.
Referring to the government move to amend the Constitution, he said the invitation to BNP to attend the meeting of the Constitutional Amendment Committee is nothing but eyewash. “Basically, the government wants to legitimize the constitutional amendment through us.”
