Detained DU teachers, students to be released soon
Visiting British Conservative Party MP Anne Main yesterday expressed her hope that the detained teachers and students of Dhaka University (DU) would be released soon through legal process.
She also hoped that the prevailing state of emergency would be lifted as soon as possible as freedom for political speech is important for free and fair election.
Main made the comments while talking to reporters on DU campus after a meeting with Vice-chancellor Prof SMA Faiz at the Senate Building in the afternoon.
She said they are concerned about the release of detained teachers and students, and the VC has told her that they are optimistic about their immediate release.
Teaching is a respectful profession and there should be freedom of expression for them, she added.
Main, also vice-chair of All Party Parliamentary Group, is now in the country on a weeklong private visit to discuss elections and other issues with the government and opposition leaders and civil-society representatives.
DU Pro-VC Prof AFM Yusuf Haider, Proctor Prof AKA Firoz Ahmed and law faculty dean Prof Borhan Uddin were present at the meeting.
