MiG-29 Case

Hasina no more an accused

A Dhaka court yesterday deducted the name of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina from the list of the accused in the MiG-29 purchase graft case as the High Court had earlier quashed the proceedings against her in the case.
Judge Mohammad Abdul Majid of the Special Court for Dhaka Division passed the order following an application submitted by Hasina's lawyer Mohammad Habibur Rahman.
The HC bench on March 9 last year quashed the proceedings brought against Awami League Chief Sheikh Hasina, but her lawyer yesterday submitted certified copy of the HC judgment.
Hasina's name was in the accused-list of the case as the lawyer failed to submit the certified copy of the judgment copy.
The same court, on August 20 in 2008, framed charges against Hasina and five others in connection with the case.
The other accused are former air force chief Jamaluddin Ahmed, former defence secretary Syed Yusuf Hossain, Air Commodore (retd) Mirza Akhter Maruf, former joint secretary Mohammad Hossain Serniabat, and Unique Group Managing Director Nur Ali were however in the dock yesterday.
On August 12, 2008, the court relieved former army chief Gen (retd) Mustafizur Rahman of all charges in the case, as he had passed away on August 3.
Several other cases filed against her during the four-party alliance and the caretaker government tenure were quashed on different dates.
