Jt forces monitor rice markets in Khulna
Joint forces Friday evening started investigation in rice wholesale markets in Khulna and Daulatdia and talked with traders and wholesalers about rise in rice eprices.
There are allegations that a section of wholesalers and rice mill owners have created an artificial crisis by hoarding to raise the prices.
On Friday night, joint forces visited some rice godowns in the city and at Daulatpur and found huge of stocks of rice there.
It is learnt from sources in Khulna Metropolitan Police that most of godown owners in the city including ten in Daulatpur have gone into hiding keeping their godowns under lock and key hearing joint forces' operation.
There has so far been no indication of decline in rice prices in Khulna.
Retailers of Khulna kitchen markets accused importers, godown owners and rice mill owners of hoarding huge quantities of rice and paddy at secret places in Khulna also in their own godowns in northern districts.
Some retailers on condition of anonimity expressed their inability decrease prices under pressure, saying they bought rice at Tk 30 per kg only a week back. “We can not incur loss after investing huge money in the business”, one retailer said.
Commanding officer of Rapid Action Battalion-6, Lt Col Mezbaul Haque, said they have started operations in city to track down hoarders.
