Confce of elected local govt representatives tomorrow
A conference of the elected local government representatives will be held at National Parade Square at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar in the city tomorrow.
A total of 10,000 representatives of the local government will be informed about the recommendations submitted by a seven-member committee at the conference.
The caretaker government formed a seven-member committee led by former secretary Dr AMM Shawkat Ali on June 3, 2007 in this regard.
The committee submitted a four-part recommendation to the Chief Adviser Fakhruddin Ahmed on November 13, 2007.
The government will take further initiatives to strengthen the local government on the basis of the feedback provided by the representatives about the recommendations.
Chief Adviser Dr Fakhruddin will address the first session of the conference that will begin at 9:00am.
The second session will start at 12:00noon where Army Chief General Moeen U Ahmed, Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Chairman Lt Gen (retd) Hasan Mashhud Chowdhury, Regulatory Reforms Commission Chairman Dr Akbar Ali Khan, Bangladesh Bank Governor Salehuddin Ahmed and UNDP representative will be present.
The report suggested reserving one-third of the seats in union parishad, municipality and city corporation for women, LGRD Adviser Anwarul Iqbal said while addressing a press briefing at the National Parade Square yesterday.
He added that many commission had previously been formed but none of their reports had yet been implemented.
He also said that he will urge the local government representatives to set up a market in every union. "If it is possible, we will get around additional 4,500 bazaars across the country which will help us control the price hike and reduce the interference of the middlemen.”
LGRD Secretary Sheikh Khorshed Alam and LGED Chief Adviser Shahidul Hasan were also present at the press briefing.
