Overhaul Biman now
As per the news appeared in The Daily Star that the Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism in a recent letter sent to the management of Biman stated that it was not happy with the explanation towards justifying the loss they incurred which is about over Taka 80 crores despite an increase in the passenger ratio from the previous year.
It is seen in the past that due to continuous loss the government initiated plans to handover the management of Biman to foreign airlines but the plan could not be materialized due to some restrictions imposed by the government. However, government on July 27, 2007 made Biman a Public Limited Company with the hope that as an autonomous body Biman would be able to work independently with more dynamism and will increase its capability to support itself in the competitive aviation business.
The government must appoint qualified consultants with years of proven experience to upgrade expertise of the staff, offload Biman's shares immediately in the capital market and raise money to offset losses, upgrade passenger services, go for aggressive marketing, restart its in-flight magazine for image boosting, get rid of incompetent and corrupt management team, put stringent check on falsified repair bills, stop unnecessary purchase, close unprofitable routes, check over staffing, check political interference and most importantly curb corruptions at all levels.
I am sure if government is sincere in its effort, very soon Biman will emerge as a profit making concern.
