Gamblers attack police van in Ghatail, 5 hurt

Five policemen, including a sub-inspector (SI), were injured in an attack by gamblers at Deohata village in Ghatail upazila of Tangail district early yesterday.
Mominur Rahman, officer-in-charge (OC) of Ghatail Police Station, said a police team from the police station went to the village at around 1:00am after being informed about gambling and obscene dance at a function there.
Sensing the presence of the law enforcers, the gamblers swooped on them, leaving SI Abdul Hannan and constables Hazrat Ali, Niamatullah, Asaduzzaman and Anwar Hossain injured. They also damaged a police pick up van.
Later, a police team from the same police station raided the village and arrested four people. The arrestees are Rakibul Hasan, Abdus Salam, Sujan Miah and Badal Miah.
The injured police personnel were admitted to Ghatail Upazila Health Complex. SI Abdul Hannan filed a case with the police station.
UNB adds: Members of Border Guards Bangladesh (BGB) and Rab seized 2.5 kg heroin in separate drivers conducted at Sadipur border here on Thursday and Wednesday and arrested a drug peddler.
Acting on a tip-off a team of BGB led by check post in-charge Nazrul Islam conducted a drive at a Mehogoni orchard at Sadipur frontier and challenged two drug peddlers on Thursday night.
Sensing presence of the border guards, the drug peddlers managed to flee leaving behind a packet containing heroin and chemical.
