Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu yesterday congratulated Iraq on forming a new government at the start of a one-day mission to Baghdad, officials said.
"Mr Davutoglu arrived this morning in Baghdad," Iraq's deputy foreign minister, Labid Abawi, told AFP.
"The visit is to congratulate Iraq on forming a new government," he added, referring to the December 21 approval of an administration in Baghdad, more than nine months after a March parliamentary election.
Abawi gave no further details.
But the foreign ministry in Ankara said Davutoglu would stay in Baghdad for a day and meet with his Iraqi counterpart Hoshyar Zebari, President Jalal Talabani.
