Ex-MP Lalu sued for tax evasion
Former BNP lawmaker Helaluzzaman Talukder Lalu was sued yesterday for tax evasion and providing false information in his asset statement.
Mirza Ashiq Rana, assistant tax commissioner of National Board of Revenue under Circle 1, Bogra filed the case with the court of senior special judge, reports our staff correspondent in Bogra.
In the case statement Mirza said that the former MP evaded a huge amount of tax by concealing information of his wealth worth Tk 48,96,117.
Public Prosecutor AM Abul Kalam Azad said Lalu evaded Tk 12 lakh in tax and the case against him was filed under income tax law and Emergency Power Rules. A total of 11 individuals including a bank manager and several government officials were made witnesses in the case, he added.
Helaluzzaman Talukder Lalu was earlier awarded imprisonment in various terms in connection with illegal use of wireless communication equipment and illegal acquisition of government properties.
Trials of several other cases including extortion cases against him are currently going on.
Meanwhile in Bagerhat, charge sheet against MAH Selim, former BNP lawmaker from Bagerhat 2, and 14 other BNP activists were submitted to court on Wednesday, reports our staff correspondent in Khulna.
The accused have been charged for illegally occupying a shrimp enclosure at Rampal upazila of Bagerhat district.
Zahurul Haque, officer in charge of Rampal Police Station and investigation officer of the case, submitted the charge sheet.
Owner of the Shrimp Exclosure Sheikh Mezbauzzaman Tipu filed the case on July 29 this year with Rampal Police station.
The 14 other charge sheeted accused include Mehbubul Haque Kishore, president of Bagerhat district Jubo Dal, Khwaja Moinuddin, vice president Rampal upazila unit of BNP, Sheikh Asaduzzaman Asad, president of Gouramva union unit of BNP, Shukur Fakir, member of Ujalkurh Union Parishad, and BNP leaders Mozab Sheikh and Munna Sheikh.
Ex-lawmaker Selim, who is also the president of Bagerhat district BNP, Asaduzzaman Azad, Mozab Sheikh and Munna Sheikh are now in jail while others are at large.
