Two more Shibir men held at RU
Police yesterday arrested two more Shibir activists at Rajshahi University (RU) in connection with February 9 campus violence that killed BCL worker Faruque Hossain, a masters student of mathematics department.
The arrestees are Mujahidul Islam, a sixth semester student of finance and banking department and Ariful Islam, a fourth year student of chemistry department of the university.
Sources said, Chhatra League (BCL) activists of the university unit caught Mujahidul Islam as he took part in a programme of business studies faculty students. The students were holding a procession demanding 'indifferent grading system' at around 10:30am. Both were handed him over to Motihar police.
On hearing the news of another Shibir activist's presence at RU, BCL activists raided different places on the campus and caught Ariful Islam from the university's Tukitaki Chhttar at around 1:00pm.
On information, law enforcers rushed to the spot and arrested Ariful.
BCL leaders alleged that Ariful took part in February 9 campus violence. On the day, the Shibir men cut the tendons of BCL worker Firuz Hossain near Binodpur Bazar area.
RU Proctor Prof Chowdhury Muhammad Zakaria said the Shibir men were arrested for their alleged involvement in February 9 campus violence that hacked to death Faruque Hossain and left more than one hundred BCL leaders and activists injured.
Abul Khair, officer-in-charge of Motihar police station said they will take legal steps against the arrestees.
According to Motihar police, a total of 252 Shibir leaders and activists have been arrested till date in connection with 14 cases filed after the February 9 violence.
Of them, 28 were arrested in connection with BCL worker Faruque Hossain killing case filed by RU unit BCL secretary of suspended committee Mazedul Islam Opu.
