Chariots of fire

While drafting the mail on the topic, I feared a backlash from none other than Mr. Sikander Ahmed, and it happened exactly the way I thought. Since we cannot communicate with one another on a personal level, I hope the esteemed daily shall allow me the privilege to express my response in these columns.
With due respect to all, I would like to say unlike may be 90% of the first generation vehicle users, I am a third generation in a row since day one of my life. Even during my short stay in Houston, Texas, I drove a Honda Odessy van. In Dhaka I drive the most inexpensive vehicle available in the country and that too I bought with a bank loan. As such I do not consider it a luxury.
Mr. Sikander Ahmed may have a hundred and one reasons for retaining the rickshaws as a means of mass transportation in the country. Without getting into arguments with him in this regard, I would simply request him if possible to please arrange for a test and see the difference. Have the rickshaws and other such transports off the road for a day and just see the result, I am somewhat confident 50% of traffic jams would go. Perhaps I have not written anything directly for banning the use of rickshaws. Now it is too late for such an action; whereas many countries of the world have done away with non-motorised vehicles, Bangladesh is still hanging on to it.
