FFs hoist national flag in Manikganj on this day
Valiant freedom fighters and Indian allied forces on this months continued their triumphant march towards Dhaka, making the final victory against the occupation Pakistan forces clear in sight.
People of Manikganj district will observe today 'Manikganj liberation day', reports our Manikganj correspondent.
Declaring the district (the then sub-division) free from occupation forces, heroic freedom fighters hoisted national flag atop the Primary Training Institute (PTI) in Manikganj on this day in 1971.
Under the leadership of captain Abdul Halim Chowdhury, the freedom-loving people of Manikganj district prepared to resist the Pakistani army in March 1971.
A day after the declaration of independence on March 26, freedom fighters took firearms from Manikganj Treasury and started training at different places in the district.
Later the Pak forces captured important establishments, entered different areas of the district and killed many innocent people while freedom fighters engaged in several fights with the occupation forces.
Eighty-two Pak soldiers were killed and 50 others held with injuries in a fierce battle with freedom fighters at Golaidanga village in Singair upazila on October 28.
In the last week of November in 1971, fresh groups of freedom fighters entered different areas of Manikganj and defeated Pakistani troops in a few battles. Finally they declared the then sub-division free on December 13.
Muktijuddher Bijoy Mela Udjapon Parishad-2010 has organised a 15-day-long 'Muktijuddher Bijoy Mela' from today. Food and Disaster Management Minister Abdur Razzak, also a veteran freedom fighter, will attend as chief guest at the inaugural function at 3:00pm.
Photo exhibition on Liberation War, discussions, cultural functions and sports competition are some of the features of the fair.
Our Tangail Correspondent adds: Victorious freedom fighters entered Tangail town and took control over the region on December 11 in 1971.
The day before, the paratroopers of the Indian forces landed at Poulee near Tangail town while the Pakistani occupation forces fled towards Dhaka.
During the earlier months, valiant freedom fighters of Kaderia Bahini led by Abdul Kader Siddiqui Bir Uttam took part in several face-to-face fights with the Pakistani forces at different places of the district. Their successful operations had already made the occupation forces weak and demoralised.
On occasion of Tangail liberation day, political and cultural organisations arranged different programmes across the district.
