Prime accused scot-free 2 months into Natore UZ chairman killing
Two months into the killing of Baroigram upazila chairman Sanaullah Noor Babu, police are yet to arrest any prime accused in the case.
Police said they were making frantic efforts to trace the killers, while wife of slain BNP leader Mohua Noor Kochi accused them of inaction.
"Police are not taking necessary steps to arrest the killers of my husband. I think they can do everything if they wish to," a disappointed Kochi told this correspondent yesterday.
It is hard to believe that police cannot find them out, she regretted.
Police have so far arrested only four alleged attackers including Russell Hossain Rappu, a Chhatra League (BCL) activist of Baroigram upazila unit from his house at Mohisdanga village. Other arrestees are ruling party activists Ashraful Islam Mithu, 32, Mohammad Badsha, 35, and Lutfor Rahman, 35.
On December 1, seven accused -- BCL, Jubo League and Sramik League activists Rezaul Karim Rikon, 22, younger brother of detained co-accused Russel Hossain, Hashem Mridha, 27, Gautam Ghosh, 30, Abdul Malek, 30, Habib, 32, Babu Mollah, 21, and Babul Molla, nephew of Khokan Molla, one of the main accused in the case surrendered before the Senior Judicial Magistrate's Court in Natore and sought bails.
The court rejected their bail prayers and sent them to prison on surrender. They are now in jail.
Police are unwilling to arrest the other accused including the main suspects KM Zakir Hossain, ex-information and research secretary of the AL's Natore district unit and president of AL's Bonpara municipal unit Khokon Mollah, Kochi alleged.
"I feel very insecure as the other accused are still at large," she told this correspondent at her Bonpara resident.
Abdul Hannan, sub-inspector of DB police in Natore, also the investigation officer said his teams are making drives in different places of several districts to nab the culprits.
"We are trying our best to arrest the accused," Hannan added.
More than 100 Awami League, Jubo League and Chhatra League activists attacked a BNP procession with lethal weapons at Bonpara bazar on October 8, killing Babu and badly injuring 20 others, including four journalists.
Mohua Noor Kochi filed a murder case with Baraigram police station accusing 27 people by name while keeping 20 others unnamed.
