Brokers blamed
Awami League lawmaker from Rupganj Gazi Golam Dastagir and former army chief Maj Gen (retd) KM Shafiullah yesterday put the blame of Rupganj violence on brokers, who were selling land to the army.
Shafiullah said the brokers wanted to make the sale quickly so that they could get more benefit, but it made the people scared.
"When I heard the brokers are taking huge sum of money, I initiated to solve the problem. When the issue was settled after holding meetings the brokers and housing companies took the opportunity because they did not want that the dispute to be resolved," said Shafiullah, also a former lawmaker.
Lawmaker Golam Dastagir said there is no problem if army wants to buy land, but it's the brokers who created the problem.
Normalcy is gradually being restored in Rupganj though many male villagers are still on the run fearing arrests. The whereabouts of three missing people still could not be known, police say.
Lawmaker Dastagir and the additional superintendent of Narayanganj police urged the male villagers to return to their houses. They have assured that common people won't be arrested or harassed.
