Attack in Pabna

26 AL men denied bail

A court here yesterday granted bail to a Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) leader and refused 26 others in one of the two cases filed in connection with the attack on government officials during a recent recruitment test in the town.
Senior Judicial Magistrate of Speedy Trial Tribunal of Pabna, Md Parvez Shahriar granted bail to Santosh Kumar Hawladar, former vice-president (VP) of Pabna Edward College Students Union and leader of district unit BCL, on health grounds and on the eve of the Durga Puja. The court allowed the bail against a bond of Tk 10,000.
“We filed bail prayers mentioning the names of Santosh Kumar Hawladar and Sajjad Rahman Sajal, as both of them are ill and under treatment in Pabna General Hospital," said defence lawyer Abdul Ahad.
The lawyer questioned the case statements of the two cases, arguing that the distance between the two examination centres is about two kilometres and it is quite impossible for the same persons committing crimes in two different places within just five minutes.
After hearing the lawyer's arguments, the court ordered to proceed on for the trial and fixed October 20 for the next date of the case. The accused were not produced before the court yesterday.
About 100 persons attacked the administration officials, vandalised their cars and obstructed the law enforcers from performing their duties during a recruitment test on September 17.
Two executive magistrates filed two separate cases on the same day with Pabna Sadar Police Station in connection with the same incident, naming 31 leaders and activists of ruling Awami League and its front organisations.
