Pro-AL panel wins DU dean election
The pro-Awami League teachers' blue panel won the dean's election of Dhaka University against BNP-Jamaat backed-teachers' white panel yesterday.
The blue panel candidates survived the polls in six faculties out of 10, losing the rest to white panel.
The winning party candidates are -- Dr Mohammad Yousuf Ali Mollah, science faculty; Prof Farid Uddin Ahmed, social sciences; Dr Shahid Akter Hussain biology; Prof Mohammad Motlub Ali, fine arts; Dr Nasrin Ahmed, earth and environment sciences; and Dr AI Mustafa, engineering and technology.
From the white panel, Prof Sadrul Amin made the victory in arts faculty while Dr Taslima Monsur, Dr Jamal Uddin Ahmed and Dr Habibur Rahman won in the faculties of law, business studies and pharmacy.
Blue Panel Convener Prof Anwar Hossain said they won the poll as consciousness has grown among the teachers, also terming it the victory for pro-liberation forces at the university.
Congratulating the winners, White Panel Convener Prof Sadrul Amin said they defeated, because the present administration has politically recruited a good number of teachers in one year. He said the election was fair.
The voting started at 10:00am at Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban on the campus, which ended at 2:00pm without any pause.
Election Commissioner Prof Mijanur Rahman, DU treasurer, said teachers voted simultaneously, and no complaint was received from any of the parties. He said 1,135 teachers voted to elect the new deans, and votes of 21 were cancelled as they failed to vote properly.
In the polls, left-leaning teachers participated under the umbrella of blue-panel.
