Painting competition to mark World Children’s Day
A painting competition for children was held on Monday morning to mark World Children's Day and Child Rights' Week 2010 at Thakurgaon Zila Parishad Auditorium.
Over 100 school children from different educational institutions participated in three groups in the competition titled 'Our School' and 'Child Rights'.
Children of 'Ka' group were free to improvise, while 'Kha' group was given the subject of 'Our School' and 'Ga' group, 'Child Rights'.
Judges Khademul Islam, Ujjal Chowdhury and Mohammad Alam selected nine children from three groups for awards.
There was more for children at World Children's Day and Child Rights' Week 2010. Apart from the painting competition, Thakurgaon District Administration and district unit of Bangladesh Shishu Academy had organised a weeklong programme including a rally; competitions on hand writing, essay, debate, songs, recitation and athletics for unprivileged and differently children; cultural programmes and a play.
Tosmat Ara Begum, a mother of a participant in the painting competition, told The Daily Star that through such events children and their guardians could be more aware of children's rights. Moreover, these programmes can help the psychological and physical development of children.
Indira Rani, a Class X student who secured the first prize in the 'Ga' group at the painting competition, told this correspondent, “Through the competition we learnt about our rights which will enable us to have a better future.”
Earlier in the morning a rally was brought out from the Deputy Commissioner's office premises that ended at the Shishu Academy office premises after going through different streets in the town.
Additional Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Thakurgaon Abdul Mannan inaugurated the weeklong programme prior to the rally.
Teachers and students from different schools also participated in the procession.
