8 Sherpur Jamaat men jailed for creating panic
A Sherpur court on Sunday sentenced eight Jamaat leaders and workers to two years imprisonment for creating panic among the townspeople in July this year.
The convicts are Dr Mohammad Shahadat Hossain, ameer of Sherpur district unit, Abdul Kader, ameer of Nalitabari upazila unit, Ruhul Amin, Nalitabari pourasava unit general secretary, and Jamaat workers Afsar Uddin, Moshtaque Ahmed, Abdul Awal, Lablu Miah and Parag Miah. They were tried in absentia.
The court, however, acquitted 16 others Jamaat leaders and workers, including Sherpur district unit general secretary Maulana Abdul Baten, as charges brought against them could not be proved.
According to the prosecution, Jamaat Sherpur district unit brought out a procession in the town on July 30 demanding release of three top Jamaat leaders. Following the procession, the Jamaat men created a chaotic situation in Tin Ani and Noi Ani bazar areas in the town.
Sajib Khan, assistant sub-inspector of Sherpur DB police, filed a case on July 31 against 24 Jamaat men with Sherpur Sadar Police Station under Speedy Trial Act.
Judge Nurul Alam Mohammad Nipu of Sherpur Speedy Trial Tribunal delivered the verdict.
