Try killers of intellectuals
Martyred Intellectuals' Day was observed in districts yesterday with a call for trial of war criminals.
Freedom fighters joined by cultural activists, professionals and people from all walks of life formed human chains and held discussion meetings demanding trial and punishment of killers of intellectuals.
Our RU Correspondent reports: In Rajshahi, the day's programme began in the morning with placing of wreath at the Central Shaheed Minar by Vice Chancellor (VC) Prof Dr Altaf Hossain.
Pro VC Prof Mamnunul Keramat, teachers and high officials of the university were present there. Rajshahi University Teachers' Association (RUTA), cultural organisations and hall authorities also placed wreathes at the Shaheed Minar.
National flag was hoisted at half-mast atop the administrative building, VC's house and dormitories. RUTA brought out a procession on the campus. Its president Prof Zillur Rahman led the procession. A discussion was held at Juberee Bhabon.
Shaheed Smiriti Sangrasala organised an art competition at the Shaheed Minar.
Special prayers were offered after Johar prayers at the university central mosque. Shaheed Smiriti Sangrasala remained open for visitors till evening.
Another report says: Famous dramatist and president of Bangladesh Group Theater Federation and Mukto Natok Dal Mamunur Rashid called for unity of all patriotic and progressive forces of the country for trial and punishment of war criminals. He was addressing a discussion at the Shaheed Minar.
Muktijodha Command Council also organized another discussion at the same venue.
Earlier, Mamunur Rashid placed wreath at the Shaheed Minar and observed two-minute silence in memory of martyred Intellectuals. Later, he placed wreath at the mass graves on the campus. He also met four teachers of the university who were released from jail recently.
Our Dinajpur Correspondent reports: Bangladesh Sector Commanders Forum and cultural activists here formed a human chain. This was followed by a discussion in front of Dinajpur Udichi Complex in the afternoon where speakers urged the government to try war criminals under the existing law.
In another meeting, Dinajpur unit of Bangladesh Muktijoddha Sangsad also demanded punishment to the war criminals.
Among others, Sammillito Sangkrik Jote convener Miza Anwarul Islam Tanu, Md Rezaur Rahman, Biman Biswas and Md. Mosaddeque Ali Mongolia spoke on the occasion.
Our Satkhira Correspondent reports: Over 400 freedom fighters, in response to call of Sector Commanders' Forum, formed a human chain on Shaheed Kajal Sarani in front of Muktijoddha Sangsad office here yesterday.
Later, a discussion was held at the Muktijoddha Sangsad office.
Sangsad district command unit convenor Matiur Rahman was in the chair.
Among others, freedom fighters Prof Abu Ahmed, MA Khaleque, Magfur Rahman and Abu Bakkar Siddique, Kazi Riaz, Abdul Bari, Jalal Uddin, Abdul Hai, Advocate Nurul Alam, Azibar Rahman and Saiful Karim Sabu addressed.
Our Manikganj Correspondent reports: Freedom fighters and people of all walks of life formed a human chain at Garpara Arjubanu High School ground where martyred Chan Mia was laid to rest. The two-minute human chain was formed demanding trial of war criminals.
About 200 people including teachers, students, lawyers, journalists and farmers participated.
Manikganj district Awami League (AL) President Golam Mohiuddin, its General Secretary Gazi Kamrul Huda Selim, Central Unit of Jatiya Somajtantrik Dal (JSD-Inu) Joint Secretary Iquebal Hossain Khan, President of Manikganj Chamber of Commerce and Industry Mahbubul Alam Runu, AL leaders Badrul Islam Bablu, Hasib Uddin Ahmed Selim, BNP leader Azad Hossain Khan, JSD leader Abdus Sattar joined the human chain.
At another memorial meeting at the school, Biplob, a nephew of martyred Chan Mia, urged the authorities concerned to make a museum for protecting his memory.
Our Pabna Correspondent reports: A discussion was held at Pabna Press Club. Press Club president Rumi Khondokar presided.
Among others, journalists Anwarul Haque, Rabiul Islam Rabi, Utpol Mirza, Shahidur Rahman, Ahmed Ul Haque Rana and Prof Shibojit Nag addressed.
Earlier, Pabna Press Club, Sammilito Shangiskritic Jote, and Bijoy Mela committee laid wreathes at the alter of 'Durjoy Pabna' and Liberation War Memorial.
