RMG workers block highways
Agitating workers of two garment factories blocked the Dhaka-Aricha and Kaliakoir-Nabinagar highways yesterday morning to press home their demands.
The blockades caused immense suffering to the homebound passengers before the Eid-ul-Fitr.
The workers of RK Homes Textile Ltd blocked Kaliakoir-Nabinagar highway at Zirani in Sadar upazila for nearly an hour from 8:00am demanding arrears and Eid bonus, creating a 10-kilometre-long traffic jam on the highway.
Iftekhar, administrative officer of the factory, said the arrears and Eid bonus would be paid by today (yesterday), reports a correspondent from Gazipur quoting Syed Azharul Islam, sub-inspector of Chakrabarti police outpost.
The workers of Monno Attire Ltd at Gilanda in Manikganj Sadar upazila put barricade on Dhaka-Aricha highway for about one hour as the management of the factory asked them to work for more hours without any break.
The workers alleged that they worked nearly 16 hours from 3:00pm on Tuesday. As they wanted to leave the factory around 7:00am yesterday, the authorities asked them to work for about 24 more hours, reports our Manikganj correspondent.
Ismail Turkey, a director of Monno Attire, however claimed that they asked the workers to work only for five hours since 3:00pm yesterday.
The workers also said that the factory authorities had served low quality food during iftar and Sehri on Tuesday.
Azizul Haque, officer-in-charge of Sadar Police Station, said around 1,500 workers of the factory put barricade on the highway at about 8:30am.
The workers withdrew the blockade around 9:30 am after the OC assured them of resolving the issue through negotiation with the factory authorities, sources said.
Later, the demonstrators took position in front of the factory gate.
The workers withdrew their agitation programme around 12:30am after the factory authorities assured them of meeting their demand regarding the extra-hour work.
