Two dyeing factories fined for polluting Karnaphuli
The Department of Environment (DoE) yesterday fined Tk 10.2 lakh to two dyeing factories under anti-environment pollution drive in Kalurghat and Nasirabad Industrial areas in the port city for polluting river Karnaphuli.
DoE Director (Enforcement) Munir Chowdhury said C&A Textile Mills Limited of Kalurghat was fined Tk 7 lakh as its effluent treatment plant (ETP) was found not working effectively and discharging chemical wastes.
SK Accessories Limited of Nasirabad was fined Tk 3.2 lakh for running the dyeing activities without ETP, he said.
“Both the industries didn't obtain environmental clearances from the DoE and they were discharging untreated liquid wastes,” Munir said.
Meanwhile, Mohammad Musa Kalimullah, owner of Sakura Hill Resorts, at Bandarban town was fined Tk 1 lakh for cutting hill for developing the resort without prior permission, he added.
