Manju, wife face bribery charge
The Anti-corruption Commission (ACC) yesterday pressed charges against Jatiya Party (Manju) Chairman Anwar Hossain Manju, his wife Tasmima Hossain and his cousin Mahmud Hossain in a case filed in connection with taking Tk 1 crore as bribe from a construction company.
Meanwhile, the ACC filed a case against former BNP lawmaker Nadim Mostafa and his wife Nurunnahar Parul with Ramna Police Station in connection with concealing their wealth and amassing properties through illegal means.
A Dhaka court yesterday sent former Awami League (AL) lawmaker Kazi Zafarullah, arrested under section 16(2) of the Emergency Power Rules (EPR), to jail after he was produced before the court.
CASE AGAINST MANJU
ACC Assistant Director Abu Sayeed, also the investigation officer (IO) of the case, submitted the charge sheet against the three accused before the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's (CMM) Court showing 23 people as prosecution witnesses.
The IO also prayed for the issuance of arrest warrants against them and the order to attach all their properties as the accused have been absconding since the case was filed.
The IO, however, dropped name of Manju's daughter Shima Hossain from the charge sheet.
In the first information report (FIR) filed with Dhanmondi Police Station on July 25, ACC Assistant Director Sheikh Faiaz Alam, the complainant, said the accused took Tk 1 crore bribe from Al-Amin Construction Company Ltd between February 17 and February 20, 2000 promising it the work order for a Roads and Highways Department (RHD) construction job.
The FIR further said Managing Director of the company Amin Ahmed Bhuiyan paid the money to Manju in two pay orders. Manju was the communications minister then.
On June 26, Manju was sentenced to five years' simple imprisonment and was fined Tk 10,000 for possessing 21 bottles of liquor at his Dhanmondi home.
There is also a graft case against Manju pending with the Special Court for Dhaka Division.
CASE AGAINST NADIM
ACC Assistant Director Ali Akbar filed a case with Ramna Police Station against Nadim and his wife in connection with concealing Tk 3.03 crore in their wealth statements submitted to the ACC.
They had allegedly amassed over Tk 2.47 crore through illegal means.
Earlier, Nadim was sentenced to 15 years' rigorous imprisonment in two criminal cases filed with different police stations in Rajshahi.
CASE AGAINST ZAFAR
Lalbagh police produced Kazi Zafarullah, AL presidium member, before the CMM's Court yesterday afternoon showing him arrested under the EPR.
They requested him to be sent to jail until an investigation regarding his making provocative speeches at Dhaka Central Jail gate, following his bail in another case, was complete.
He was arrested at jail gate around 7:15pm Tuesday just after being released on bail.
On May 18, he was detained and later shown arrested in a case filed in connection with extorting Tk 50 lakh from businessman and AL leader Gazi Golam Dastigar.
