India asked to deport 3 top Bangladeshi criminals before Eid
Bangladesh Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has requested West Bengal CID of India to deport before the Eid-ul-Azha three Bangladeshi most wanted criminals arrested by it.
West Bengal CID has already invited Bangladesh CID in this regard, and a team would fly to India soon, CID sources said.
West Bengal CID however demanded that Indian criminals arrested in Bangladesh be deported in exchange for Bangladeshi criminals arrested in India, the sources added.
Most wanted criminal Sanzidul Islam Imon was arrested by West Bengal CID this week and the other two-- Tanvirul Islam Joy and Haris -- were arrested earlier.
Imon was arrested near the New Market in Kolkata. Shown arrested on charge of holding fake passport, he was placed on a two-day remand for CID interrogation.
West Bengal CID has so far deported five Bangladeshi criminals. Of them, Rafiq and Babul alias Jewel, close accomplices of Joy, are in Jessore jail.
The other three -- Habibur Rahman Taj, Ibrahim and Lamba Selim -- deported in October, are now in Dhaka Central Jail.
Sources said West Bengal CID has demanded that Indian criminal Jiban Singh and one of his accomplices, reportedly hiding in Bangladesh, be handed to it in exchange for deportation of arrested Bangladeshi criminals.
Asked about this, Bangladesh CID chief Phani Bhushan Chowdhury however declined to make any comment.
On the arrest of Imon, he said, "We have heard about it but the Indian authorities have informed us nothing."
In reply to another question, the CID chief said, "Although there is no extradition treaty between Bangladesh and India, the West Bengal authorities deported five Bangladeshi criminals due to good relations between the two countries…We are in close contact with West Bengal CID for bringing back more Bangladeshi criminals.”
Md Abdullah Aref, additional special superintendent of the CID (Addl SS-CID) said they had helped West Bengal CID in arresting Imon.
"Imon had been threatening some people in Bangladesh over phone demanding money. We collected the phone numbers he was using, and gave those to West Bengal to help them arrest him."
Abdullah also said West Bengal CID is not yet sure whether the arrested persons are Joy, Imon and Haris. And it has invited Bangladesh CID to send a team to confirm their identity.
"We have requested them to take steps to send back Imon, Joy and Haris before the Eid-ul-Azha. We are hopeful that it would be possible"
“ They (West Bengal CID) have sought our help in arresting and sending back Indian criminals hiding in Bangladesh,”he added.
According to sources, at least 350 to 400 Bangladeshi criminals are hiding in India while a number of Indian criminals are also staying in Bangladesh. Law enforcement agencies of both the countries already arrested a number of them.
At the meetings between Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) and Border Security Force (BSF) in October, the two countries exchanged lists of such criminals.
Our Benapole correspondent adds: Bangladesh CID had faxed messages to West Bengal CID on the arrest of some Bangladeshi criminals for bringing them back.
