Another woman tries to kill herself, daughter
In another suicide attempt in the city, a mother with her baby daughter jumped before a running train yesterday near Sainik Club at Banani as her husband divorced her to marry someone else.
Maksuda Begum, 32, wife of Ashraf Uddin of Araihazar upazila in Narayanganj, and her one and a half-year-old daughter Tanzina were rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital in critical condition.
Doctors said the mother and daughter are still unconscious, with severe head injuries.
Maksuda's nine-year-old son Nazmul, a class-II student of a pre-cadet school in the city, was present at the time and witnessed the attempted suicide.
At DMCH he told The Daily Star last night that his mother with Tanzina in her lap jumped on the rail tracks in the evening but the train instead of running over them hit and tossed the two away from it.
"This is your maternal uncle's contact number. Inform him about our death and tell him to arrange our burial. Inform the police about the reasons behind our suicide," said a shocked Nazmul while narrating the last conversation with his mother.
Maksuda's husband Ashraf Uddin is an employee of a factory in Tejgaon industrial area. He had been living in the area for long.
Maksuda's mother Karimunnesa said Ashraf mercilessly beat up his wife and forced her to leave the house on August 2 over his desire to marry another girl of his village. Maksuda then took shelter at her parent's village home in Araihazar.
On different occasions, Ashraf demanded dowry form Maksuda, said Karimunnesa adding that so far they have given Ashraf over Tk 1.5 lakh as per his demand.
"My father orally divorced my mother in the morning [Monday] and beat her unconscious when she went to my paternal grandparents' at Araihazar," said Nazmul.
Outraged by the divorced, she sold her gold earrings and came to Dhaka to commit suicide, he added.
Earlier on august 5, distraught over her husband's second marriage, Bilashi, 28, set fire to herself and her two children Abu Raihan and Rajani in the capital's Kamalapur. They all died at the Burn and Plastic Surgery Unit of DMCH.
On June 11, aggrieved by her husband's negligence and second marriage Farzana Kabir Rita, her 12-year-old son Pabon and 10-year-old daughter Payel committed suicide by taking sedatives in the city's Jurain.
