5 Shibir leaders held while holding 'secret' meeting
Five leaders of Islami Chhatra Shibir were arrested at Khanpara under Digholia upazila of Khulna district yesterday while Jamaat central leader Dr Abdullah Mohammad Taher was sued in Rajshahi and Tangail the same day for his provocative speech at a discussion in the capital on August 4.
Khulna police said they arrested the Shibir leaders at Khanpara Mosque where they were holding a 'secret' meeting at around 7:30am, reports our staff correspondent.
The arrestees are Shibir Khulna district unit Finance Secretary Saifullah, 21, Publicity Secretary Sohel Rahman, 25, Organising Secretary Sadikur Rahman, 24, member of the district committee Abdur Rahim, 23, and Digholia upazila unit leader Jalal Sheikh.
Abdul Kader Baig of the detective branch of Khuna district police said some magazines containing militancy related write-ups were recovered from their possession. They were planning to carry out subversive activities in Khulna city, he added.
A case under Section 54 was filed against the Shibir leaders with Digholia Police Station yesterday. Police will produce the Shibir leaders in a court here today with a remand prayer, Baig said.
According to our staff correspondent from Rajshahi, a general diary (GD) was lodged with Shah Makhdum Police Station in the city yesterday against Jamaat leader Dr Abdullah Mohammad Taher for his provocative speech at a meeting at the National Press Club in Dhaka on August 4.
Local AL leader Rafiqul Islam filed the GD, alleging that the provocative speech delivered by Dr Taher at a discussion organised by Bangladesh Youth Forum was a direct threat to security of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Judges, lawyers, ministers, officials of the law ministry and investigating agencies concerned with trial of war criminals.
Rafiqul sought legal action against Taher and his associates.
The Jamaat leader was also sued in Tangail yesterday for his provocative speech delivered at the same discussion in the capital.
Advocate Johurul Islam, joint secretary of Tangail district Awami League, filed the case with the Judicial Magistrate's Court.
Meanwhile, Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB) and Bangladesh Samajtantrik Dal (BSD) held separate rally and formed human chain in Gaibandha town yesterday demanding speedy trial of war criminals, says our correspondent
CPB district unit brought out a procession and then formed a human chain at DB road while BSD formed human chain at traffic intersection in the town.
