Fresh probe demanded
Speakers at a rally demanded a fresh and quick investigation into the fire incident that killed former Ganotantri Party president Nurul Islam, and exemplary punishment to those responsible for it.
They also rejected the government's final probe report on the fire incident at Nurul's house on December 3, 2008, that also killed his son Islam Tamohar.
Dhaka University Class-IV Employees Association organised the rally at Central Shaheed Minar on Thursday marking Nurul Islam's 68th birth anniversary. Veteran politician Nurul Islam was also the founder president of the association.
The speakers criticised the newspapers saying that they were presenting the ''murder'' of Nurul Islam as an accident.
"There was no scope for the fire to be originated from an electric short circuit because the fridge identified as a source of fire was out of order and without any connection to electricity for years," said Sikder Bulu Mia, president of the association.
The speakers hoped that the government would soon launch a fresh probe as the prime minister herself alleged that ''the incident was nothing but a planned murder.''
Dhaka University (DU) Vice Chancellor Prof AAMS Arefin Siddique, Treasurer Mizanur Rahman, Nurul Islam's wife Rubi Rahman, MP, and Ganotantri Party General Secretary Mahmudur Rahman Babu spoke at the rally.
