Stop trade in name of health services
Health rights activists urged the government yesterday to strictly control trade of private hospitals in the name of providing healthcare and saving lives.
They also demanded constitutional recognition of health as a human right to ease patients' sufferings for what they call wrong treatment and high charge imposed by the private hospitals.
The call came from a human chain formed in front of Fine Arts Institute of Dhaka University protesting the growing trade of private hospitals.
A large number of sufferers and representatives of 20 different organisations joined the human chain organised by Shwasthya Odhikar Jote (health right alliance), a right-based organisation.
“Prevalence of diseases is rising. Every citizen, every family is fighting against diseases with all they have,” they said, adding, “Private hospitals have turned human body into a money-making tool.”
Speakers also demanded making it mandatory for doctors to mention generic name of a drug in the prescription, strengthening of Bangladesh Medical and Dental Council (BMDC) to increase accountability and skill of doctors and formation of a commission to formulate health policy.
Environmentalist Abu Naser Khan, folk singer Quddus Bayati, Sima Das of Shwasthya Andolon and human right activist SM Saikat, among others, were also present at the human chain.
