Power offices besieged, ransacked in 2 dists
Angry people and students in Tangail and Bogra on Wednesday and the day before attacked and vandalised local power offices protesting erratic power supply.
Basail people in Tangail ransacked the area office of the Rural Electrification Board (REB) on Wednesday night demanding smooth electricity supply in the upazila, reports our correspondent.
The power hungry people also damaged the furniture of the office including chairs and tables, glasses of the doors and windows and beat up an employee, REB sources said.
Meanwhile, locals alleged that load-shedding of electricity has increased abnormally in the upazila recently and people of the upazila are getting only 4-5 hours of supply a day.
"We do not getting more than 2 hours of electricity at night," said a protester.
Shashi Mohan Singh, a lineman of Basail REB, said about 100 people come to the office at midnight and vandalised the office and hit him with a stick, leaving him injured. The other employees of the office managed to escape unhurt, he added.
In Bogra, six residential students of Govt Azizul Haq College were held yesterday for ransacking the power station in the town during lengthy load-shedding Tuesday night.
PDB officials said power supply in the old town was suspended for two hours due to some unavoidable reason. A group of angry residential students demanding restoration of power supply broke open the gate of 24MW power station and set on fire the furniture in the security guard room. Police rushed to the spot and dispersed the students.
Later, police raided the dormitory and picked up six students. Two of them were set free while four others were arrested upon a case filed by PDB assistant engineer Faridul Hasan, police said.
The arrestees are Shafiqul Islam, Fakhrul Islam, Joynal Abedin and Abdul Awal -- all hailed from outside Bogra.
They were sent to jail after being produced in the court yesterday.
