No immediate plans to ban wheat imports: India
The Indian government has no immediate plans to ban imports of wheat by private millers, junior farm minister KV Thoamas told parliament on Tuesday.
Millers had imported 46,174 tonnes of wheat between April and June at prices ranging from 12,818 rupees ($277) per tonne to 13,874 rupees, Thomas said in a written reply.
Some millers in the southern parts of the country have been importing wheat, mostly from Australia as they found overseas purchases cheaper than transporting the grain from northern states of Punjab and Haryana, the grain bowl of India.
