CU students boycott class
Students of Chittagong University (CU) yesterday boycotted classes and demonstrated against fee hikes and cases filed against 11 CU students Thursday night.
Over one thousand students of different faculties came down in favour of their demand at around 11:00pm and locked the main gates of Arts Faculty, Science Faculty, Social Science Faculty and Commerce Faculty.
They brought out a procession on the campus and held a sit-in in front of CU academic building.
A barricade was also put up at CDA Avenue in front of Sholoshahar railway station in the afternoon causing a heavy traffic gridlock.
As more students joined the protest, another sit-in was staged at Sholoshahar intersection.
The disciplinary committee of the university was holding a meeting on this issue in the evening though the CU authorities earlier decided not to bow to the students' demand.
Contacted, CU Vice Chancellor Abu Yusuf, said no fee was hiked illogically.
Fees in CU are still less than those of other public universities in the country, he added.
The VC blamed Samajtantrik Chhatra Front and Bangladesh Chhatra Union for instigating the general students about the issue.
“We will inform the guardians of the students about the actual fees by sending letters,” the VC said.
