Shibir men clash with cops in city

At least 15 people including five law enforcers were injured in a clash between police and Islami Chhatra Shibir activists in the capital's Motijheel yesterday.
The clash erupted around 2:30pm when police tried to block a Shibir procession brought out demanding release of the top Jamaat leaders. In the face of police resistance, the activists started hurling guava and mangoes at law enforcers.
Injured Sergeant Abul Basher of Motijheel Police Outpost told The Daily Star that around 300 pickets--mostly Shibir activists--brought out a procession in front of Motijheel City Centre.
Officer-in-charge (OC) Tofazzal Hossain of Motijheel Police Station said police charged truncheon and used teargas to disperse the procession.
Five Shibir activists were picked up during the chase and counter chase between the law enforcers and activists, said the OC.
Police said Jamaat lawmaker Hamidur Rahman Azad led the procession.
In a written statement to the media, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami yesterday expressed deep resentment over "police attack" on their procession and urged the government to stop indiscriminate arrests of Jamaat activists and demanded immediate release of its detained leaders.
